Once, Paheli visited a tailor shop and brought home some cuttings of fabric to study their properties. She took two pieces and found that piece A was shrinking when it was burnt with a candle. However piece B did not shrink on burning. Can you help her to find out which of the two was a cotton fabric and which a silk fabric?

The fabric was A silk B cotton.

  • Silk and cotton are the fibres used in textile industry for production of clothes, sheets, curtains etc.
  • On the heat test, both the natural fibres do not melt.
  • On burning the fibres, silk fibre shrinks away from the flame. They also produce characteristic odour of charred meat.
  • Cotton fibre when bought near the flame burn and do not move away from it.
