Once there lived a nightingale in a forest near the palace of China’s emperor. Travellers from distant lands came sailing across the seas to hear its song because it sang wonderfully. Its fame spread far and wide. Many travellers wrote books about it. The emperor of China read the story of the nightingale. He asked his ministers to bring that bird at once. The minister’s men brought the bird within a few hours. The emperor arranged a party. He sat on a golden throne. The nightingale sat in a golden cage and started singing. She got everything but she was not happy. She wanted freedom and the emperor said that he would give everything except freedom because he loved her and could not live without her.
