Once, two friends found it difficult to find an auto because of rain and bad weather.
Several autos passed by, but none of them stopped. At last, one auto stopped. The two
friends told him of the place they wanted to go. The auto driver agreed to drop them.
Without asking anything about the auto fare, the friends got into the auto.
A little later, one of the friends asked the auto driver to stop the auto near a small
restaurant or a tea stall as the friends wanted to have a cup of tea. The auto driver
stopped the auto at the nearest tea stall.
The friends ordered tea for themselves. They offered a cup of tea to the auto driver. The
auto driver, however, refused it.
One of the friends tried to probe if the auto driver was observing a fast or any other such
reason, but could not manage to understand the auto driver's denial.
On reaching their destination, the two friends asked the auto driver about the fare and he
asked for a nominal amount despite the bad weather; something that usually auto drivers
take an advantage of. The friends paid the fare. The second friend again asked the auto
driver why he kept refusing to have a cup of tea with them.
The auto driver reflected for a moment and finally told the friends that his son had died
that morning and he didn't have money for his funeral. He had decided that till he does
the rituals he would not even sip water. The friends were shocked to hear this and
offered to pay him more money. The auto driver, however, said that he would manage
the money with two more trins. The friends were surprised at this man's honesty.
