ONCE UPON A TIME
(8 Marks
1) Ten-year-old Ziauddin, studying at Jamia Millia Islamia School, loves to hear and to tell stories.
But between his studies, his friends and his hectic lifestyle, he hasn't found much time for them
recently. So it came as a pleasant surprise when he and his classmates heard storyteller Harpreet
Kaur read and enact the story, "The Magical Web Bridge" at Jamia's Foundation Week - a work of
fiction, set in the natural world.
2)
With the help of props like a weaver bird, a spider, a tree and a nest, Harpreet held the students
spellbound, narrating the story of a Baya (weaver) bird who is imaginative, creative and active.
He not only builds a nest to woo his mate, but crosses geographical boundaries by constructing a
nest so long it leads him to another country.
3) When asked most children said that they recalled seeing the bird on their campus, but couldn't
remember its shape, colour or size. Immediately after the workshop, some children rushed to see
the baya and the nest. They started studying its behaviour and asking questions.
1) The workshop was organised by 'Katha' under their new initiative, Katha's Storytellers Unlimited
(SUN). SUN is made up of people with a passion for reading, who believe strongly that all children
should grow up with lap-time stories and books. They should be given time once a week to raise
awareness in their neighbourhood, and encourage others to enjoy stories and reading.
The story teaches children valuable lessons about cooperation and environmental awareness
birds and trees work in tandem, and if we don't start seriously thinking about the natural world,
it might san only remain in stories and pictures
