THE WISE CROCODILE

His wife always used to send him to look for food and bring some. He never liked it because if he couldn't get the food he would have to sleep outside in the frosty weather. So he brought whatever he could find. Once he saw a tree on the bank of the river. It was laden with berries which seemed to be very delicious. He reached out his tail to take some but unfortunately he was too short to even reach the half of the tree while the berries were at the top. There came a voice. It said, Crocodile, you want these berries? Come and take them. Then a branch lowered itself and crocodile took some berries. It must be a magical tree, thought the crocodile. The berries were really delicious and his wife savoured them happily. Now it became a routine:- the crocodile went to the tree, the tree lowered it's branch, crocodile took the berries and handed them over to his wife. His wife started craving the berries, so one day she asked the crocodile that from where did he brought these berries. On hearing the whole story she ordered him to go, cut the tree and bring it to her so that she could eat all the berries. Now crocodile was worried. His grandfather also was killed by his grandmother for not bringing the monkey ,who lived on the tree and gave them mangoes, to her. So he escaped from his house and across the river made a house for himself. When he did not returned even till night his wife grew anxious and started looking for him but couldn't find him. At last there was no food for her and thus she died. Now the crocodile was safe and always respected the tree who fed him all his life. He did not made the same mistake that once his grandfather had made and thus lived happily.
