The temperature went up from -4°C to 5°C
a) temperature rise = 5°C - (-4°C) = 5°C + 4°C = 9°C


b)During the afternoon the temperature then fell by 7°C from 5°C
temperature at the end of afternoon = 5°C - 7°C = -2°C 
So temperature at the end of afternoon is -2°C.
