The membrane separating the inside of an animal cell from its outside allows water to pass through; if a cell contains a high concentration of salt or other dissolved substance, water flows from blood plasma through the membrane into the cell, decreasing the concentration on the inside. When the concentrations are equal between the inside and outside of the cell, the water movement stops.
