                                               A Doctor’s Day

A doctor's day usually is quite hectic. India is the second largest populated country where the process of development is still going on. The unusual crowd on roads, lack of facilities, etc. result in quite a many mishaps, poor sanitary conditions, lack of potable water, etc. further cause many epidemics. Thus doctors in India are usually on their toes.

A doctor's day starts quite early. Whether he is at his personal clinic or at a hospital; there is always a long queue of patients waiting to be treated. Since the climatic conditions in India are predominantly tropical, diseases caused by vectors are usually on rampage.

So a doctor is always busy. However hard he try, the line of patients never end. He hardly gets any breaks. Even when he is taking lunch or dinner, patients are always waiting for him.

At night also, when after a hectic day, he goes home, he keeps receiving emergency calls. He is bound by the Hippocratic Oath to serve the ailing. Thus we see a doctor always is busy healing the sick; looking after the injured and wounded.

A DOCTOR'S DAY

There's no doubt that a doctor's position for us is equal to that of God, especially when one is in the clutches of a deadly disease. It's a noble profession and hence demands nobility like selflessness and dedication to perform one's job dutifully. His day may begin at 2 o'clock in the night and may continue until 20 hours in the evening. He has to see so many patients in a day, prescribe them medicines and/or operate a  huge number of patients.

It was one of those busy days when Dr. Varghese had already performed seven operations in the OT.  It had become a normal routine for him to operate on around twenty patients every Tuesday as he was the CMO of a small hospital in a hilly town in Himachal Pradesh.

The eighth patient was a different one, for she was his own wife. Anyhow, he had to do it. After anesthesia, when he picked scissors, his hands trembled. He, at once knew it was due to emotions. There, before him lay not a patient, but his own wife and for a moment he felt he couldn't do it. He remembered Jesus, asked for strength and tried to keep the thought that he was operating on his wife away.

After the operation, when he told his wife about his condition before operating her, she just smiled and said, "You had the heart to operate on your own self, but you fumbled when I was your patient. This shows how much you love me."
Dr. Varghese just smiled. He had successfully passed testing moments.
