Answer:

To polish an ornament the gold smith dips the gold ornament in aqua regia. Aqua regia is a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. After getting dipped in the aqua regia the outer layer of gold dissolves in the solution and the shiny part appears. Due to dissolving some part of the ornament , its weight reduces.

The Goldsmith uses a liquid (or acid) named Aqua Regia. It is a very powerful liquid. It has high dissolving capacity and can dissolve noble metals like Gold. When the jewelry losses shine its because it develops a layer of different things that come in contact with it ( it does not react with oxygen) and it is generally polished and dissolving it in Aqua Regia dissolves it and makes it weigh less.

  • It is a mixture of two strong acids namely Hydrocholric Acid [HCl] and Nitric Acid {HNO}_{3}.

  • It has the capacity to dissolve noble metals like Gold, Platinum and other noble metals.
