In transverse waves the propogation of the waves is perpendicular to the dierection of the particles of the medium and in longitudinal waves ( sound waves ) the propogation of waves is parallel to the particles of the medium.

Differences between Longitudinal Wave and Transverse Wave :-

Longitudinal Wave :
=>The particles of the medium vibrate parallel
 to the direction of propagation of wave.
=>One wave is constituted by one compression and one Rarefaction.

=>The wave propagates in the form of alternate Compressions and Rarefactions.

=>Cannot be polarised

Example : Sound wave

Transverse Wave :-

=>The particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction of propagation of wave.

=>One wave is constituted by one crest and one trough.

=>The wave propagates in the form of alternate crests and troughs.

=>Can be polarised

Example - Light Wave.
