We see the post master in the story 'The letter' as an unfeeling and unsympathetic man. He scolds coachman Ali and addresses him as 'pest'. He could not recognize the pain of a father who was waiting for the news of his daughter.
But soon the postmaster receives a news about the illness of his own daughter who lives in another town. He anxiously inspected every cover which he thought might be from his daughter. But when he did not receive the expected letter for the whole day and instead received Ali's long awaited letter, suddenly he could recognize the anxiety of a father. He regretted being angry with Ali. He no longer considered a letter as a piece of paper but he could see it as a beating heart.
