let the number be x
1/5x +5=1/4x-4
x/5-x/4=-9
4x-5x/20= -9[ since lcm of 5 and 4=20]
-x=-9x20
x=180

let the number be x

one fifth of the number is increased by 5
 \frac{1}{5}  x + 5

one forth of the number decreased by 4

 \frac{1}{4} x - 4

therefore,

 \frac{1}{5} x  + 5 =  \frac{1}{4}x - 4

 \frac{x}{5}  + 5 =  \frac{x}{4}  - 4

 \frac{x + 25}{5}  =  \frac{x - 16}{4}

 =4(x + 25) = 5( x  - 16)

4x + 100 = 5x - 80

100 + 80 = 5x - 4x
x = 180

the number is 180.
