One - fifth of a number is equal to 5/8th of another number . if 35 is added to the first number , it becomes four times of the second number. Find the second number?

According to the question,

1/5(x) = 5/8(y)

x/5=5y/8

by cross multiplying,

8x=25y

8x/25=y

so now, if 35 is added

x+35=4(8x/25)

x+35=32x/25

again by cross multiplying

25(x+35)=32x

25x+875=32x

875=32x-25x

875=7x

x= 875/7 which is 125

now the question is to find the second number.

in the beginning of the question we saw that

y=8x/25 (substituting x for 125)

y= 1000/25

y=40

hence the first number is 125 and the second number is 40
