Let the first number x

Second number=y

1x/5=5y/8

y=8x/25

Now according to given situation

x+35=4(8x/25)

x+35=32x/25

25x+875=32x

7x=875

x=125

So second number is 40

Given:

One-fifth of a number is equal to 5/8 of another number

To find:

The second number

Solution:

The required number's value is 40.

Let's assume that the required first and second number is X and Y, respectively.

We have that 1/5 of the first number is 5/8 of the second number.

So, 1/5 of X=5/8 of Y

1/5×X=5/8×Y

X/5=5Y/8

X=25Y/8 (1)

Also, we will add 35 to X so that it becomes 4 times Y.

Using the values,

X+35=4Y (2)

We will substitute X's value in (2).

25Y/8+35=4Y

On solving,

35=4Y-25Y/8

35=(32Y-25Y)/8

35×8=7Y

35×8/7=Y

5×8=Y

40=Y

Therefore, the required number's value is 40.
