one - fifth of a plank is swan off and three-eighths of the remaining piece is then thrown away. what fraction of the original plank remains?

Answer
One fifth of a plank is cut
let say plank= P

1/5 of plank is cut =p/5
remaining plank =P-P/5
remaining plank=4P/5

Three-eighths of the
remaining piece is then thrown away
(3/8)(4P/5)=3P/10
Thrown away =3P/10
remaining =4P/5-3P/10
(P/10)(8-3)
5P/10
P/2
remaining =P/2
original =P
remaining original ::P/2:P
remaining original ::1:2
1/2
