ANSWER:

Given:

  • 1/5th of estate left with sister
  • 1/4th of estate left with son
  • 1/6th of estate left with brother
  • Remainder, i.e. Rs 5,75,000 with widow

To Find:

  • Value of the estate

Solution:

Let us assume that the value of estate is x.

So,

⇒ Value of estate left with sister = x * 1/5 = x/5

⇒ Value of estate left with son = x * 1/4 = x/4

⇒ Value of estate left with brother = x * 1/6 = x/6

And,

⇒ Value of estate left with widow = Rs 5,75,000

Hence,

⇒ Total value = x/5 + x/4 + x/6 + 5,75,000

But, total value of estate is x.

So,

⇒ x = x/5 + x/4 + x/6 + 5,75,000

Taking LCM in RHS,

⇒ x = (12x + 15x + 10x)/60 + 5,75,000

⇒ x = 37x/60 + 5,75,000

Transposing 37x/60 to LHS,

⇒ x - 37x/60 = 5,75,000

⇒ (60x - 37x)/60 = 5,75,000

⇒ 23x/60 = 5,75,000

Transposing 60 to RHS,

⇒ 23x = 5,75,000 × 60

Transposing 23 to LHS,

⇒ x = (5,75,000 × 60)/23

On simplifying,

⇒ x = 25,000 × 60

So,

⇒ x = 15,00,000

Therefore, total value of the estate is Rs 15,00,000.
