The Caribbean islands were discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. The discovery lead to a brutal period of colonial rule. In the poem Dan is the Man the author writes to emancipate his readers.He uses vivid imagery to to decolonize his readers mind. He criticizes the education offered. He contends that education by saying that school teaches him like a fool and to become a block headed mule.
As the colonial education was too tough to understand they protested against learning them.
They also made fun of the English as same words had much different meaning. In the poem Dan is the man, Dan is doubtful as to why he needs to study subjects like Psychology, Biology or other sciences.
