Let the total no of deer be x

So, we have

x - ( \frac{1}{2}x \: + \frac{3}{4} \times \frac{1}{2} x) \: = 9

x - ( \frac{1}{2} x + \frac{3}{8} x) = 9

x - \frac{7}{8} x = 9

 \frac{1}{8} x = 9

Thus, x=72 deer in the herd.
