Answer:

X = sheep

Y = chickens

Legs = 4X + 2Y

Heads = X + y ( we assume no 2 headed chickens )

90 = 4X + 2 Y =(divide both sides by 2 and reorder)=> 2X + Y = 45

32 = X + Y =( solve for Y in terms of X by subtracting X from both sides)=> Y = 32 - X

Substitute Y from the second equation into the first equation

2X + 32 - X = 45 =(subtract 32 from both sides )=> 2X - X = 13 =(factor out X on the left)=> X(2-1) = 13 or X = 13

13 Sheep which gives is (32 - 13 or) 19 chicken

13 sheep + 19 chickens = 32 heads

4 legs / sheep * 13 sheep + 2 legs / chicken * 19 chickens = 52 + 38 = 90 Legs
