If there is 100%dissociation then the hoff mann factor of Hg2Cl2 is 3 because it dissociates into 3 ions.
I hope it will help u..

london2023: Frnd i wanted to ask one question...that is....why can't the van't hoff's factor for Hg2Cl2 be 4.
london2023: I'll be glad if u can help me in anyway.
london2023: Thnk u so much frnd
london2023: BYe and take care
Anjali1313: Because Hg2Cl2 dissociates into 3 ions i.e Hg2^2+ and 2Cl- It means value of n=3 and for 100% dissociation i=n i.e i=3.

answer : i = 1+2\alpha, where \alpha is degree of dissociation.

explanation : Van't Hoff's factor is used to express extent of dissociation or association.for dissociation reaction, An ⇔ nA

Van't Hoff's factor, i = 1 - \alpha + n\alpha

where \alpha is degree of dissociation.

now, come to the question,

in aqueous solution, Hg2Cl2 dissociates into (Hg2)²+ and 2Cl- ions.

so, total number of ions, n = 3

so, Van't Hoff's factor, i = 1 - \alpha + 3\alpha

= 1 + 2\alpha

now, if degree of dissociation is 100% . then,\alpha = 1 and then Van't Hoff's factor will be i = 1 + 2 = 3.
