One kilo mole of idle gas is throttled from an initial pressure of 0.5 mpa to 0.1mpa. The initial temperature is 300k. The entropy change of the universe is select one:

a. 4014.3kj/k

b. 13.38kj/k

c. 0.0446kj/k

Answer:

13.38 kj /K

Explanation:

Entropy change for ideal gas is given as [cpln(Tf/Ti) - Rln(Pi/Pf)]

Here cp = specific heat at constant pressure.

i & f are suffix for initial and final state respectively

R = universal gas constant (8.314)

Now in throttling process temperature remains same for ideal gas so Ti=Tf

Sf-Si = 0- 8.314ln(0.5/0.1)

= 13.38 kj/k

ds (uni.) = ds (sys.) + ds (surrounding)

Here change in entropy of surrounding is zero so change in entropy of universe is equal to the change of entropy of system.
