Given  : one leg of an isosceles right triangle measures 5 inches.

To Find : approximate length of the hypotenuse

Solution:

Isosceles Right angled triangle : Two sides are equal and one angle is 90°

Equal sides = 5 cm

Hypotenuse = H cm

Applying Pythagoras theorem

H² = 5² + 5²

=> H² = 25 + 25

=> H² = 50

=> H = 5√2

=> H = 5 ( 1.414)

=> H = 7.07

=> H ≈ 7.1  cm

approximate length of the hypotenuse  ≈ 7.1  cm
