One litre of oxygen was added to one litre of a mixture of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. When the whole mixture was burnt, its volume decreased to 1.8 litres. Determine the volume percent of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the mixture initially.

Answer:

Let volume of CO2 be X litre

Volume of CO = 1-X litre

Only CO2 will react with charcoal ( C ) to produce CO

We assume that all CO2 is converted into CO

CO + CO2 + C > 3CO

New volume will be

X CO2 converted to 2X CO

2X + 1-X =1.6

X=0.6

So in reaction mixture 0.6 Litre CO2 and 1-X or 0.4 litre CO were present.
