Answer: the temperature will slightly less than 40°C.

Explanation: Because water expands when heated, 1 litre of water at 50°C will have less mass than 1 litre of water at 30°C. As a result, the 30°C litre has slightly more than the 50°C litre, and thus the average will end up slightly less than 40°C.

Given : One litre of water at 30˚C is mixed with one litre of water at 50˚C

To Find : The temperature of the mixture will be

(i) 55˚C

(ii) more than 50˚C but less than 80˚C

(iii) between 30˚C and 50˚C.

Solution:

Heat flows from an object at higher temperature to an object at lower temperature.

One litre of water at 30˚C is mixed with one litre of water at 50˚C

Volume of both are same

Heat will transfer from higher temperature water to lower temperature water

means from  50°C to 30°C

Hence 50°C temperature will decrease because of heat transferred to 30°C

and 30°C temperature will increase

Hence Temperature will be between 30˚C and 50˚C

One litre of water at 30˚C is mixed with one litre of water at 50˚C. The

temperature of the mixture will be between 30˚C and 50˚C.
