International Labor Day or workers day

  • The first day of May Is termed as International Labor Day and is seen to recognize and celebrate the contribution of laborers and workers in the development of the nation.
  • The labor movements had grown drastically during the early 19th century in the United States and  the trade union demanded for a separate day to set aside in recognition of workers.
  • The United States was the first and one among the 80 countries that decided to give an official holiday to mark the first day of May dedicated to the laborers and workers.
  • It is said that the first proposal for  a day dedicated to workers was given in early 1880 and the month was also marked as September but after different movements on the same topic grew dramatically and there were different trade unions and movements  who proposed different dates but the one thing that was common in all these movements was a day to be named and dedicated for the labors.
  • After a lot of efforts given from these labor movements there was an official setup that was guided by the trade unions to declare the first of may as Labor Day.
