Let a be the number

And b be the other number.

a is twice the other number means you add b two times or multiply it by two, 2b

a is also 5 more than the above, that is you add 5 to 2b, a=5+2b .......(1)

The sum of the two numbers means (a+b) and that is equal to 29, that is; a+b=29 ......(2)

Substituting the value of a (or b will also work) in (2), we get:

5+2b+b=29

5+3b=29

3b=29-5=24

b=24/3=8

Now that we have the value of b, and since a+b=29, then:

a+8=29

a=29-8

a=21

The answer: a=21, b=8

To prove 21 is 5 more than twice 8, which is 16.
