Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Let one number be x

Therefore, second no. = x-5

According to condition,

(x)(x-5)=36

x^2 + 5x = 36

x^2 + 5x -36 = 0

x^2 + 4x -9x -36 = 0

x(x+4) -9(x+4) = 0

(x+4)(x-9) = 0

Therefore, x= -4 or x= 9

Two nos. are 9 and 4 or -4 and 1

Let the number be x and y

ATQ,

y=x-5 .......equation 1

And, x × y = 36 .......equation 2

Putting the value of x in equation 2 , we get -

x × (x - 5) = 36

x² - 5x = 36

x² - 5x - 36 = 0 (FACTORIZE AS QUADRATIC EQUATION)

x² - 9x + 4x - 36 = 0

x(x-9)+ 4(x-9) = 0

(x-9)(x+4) = 0

If x+4 = 0 | If x-9 =0

|

x = -4. | x=9

if value of x is -4 then y= -4-5=-9

if value of x is 9 then

y=9-5

=4

Therefore the numbers are

-4 and -9 or 4 and 9
