Given -

One number is 6 more than a second number. The sum of the two number is 16.

To find -

  • Numbers

Solution -

Let the required number be x and y

  • According to the question

One number is 6 more than a second number.

  • x = y + 6

→ x - y = 6 ---(i)

The sum of the two number is 16.

  • x + y = 16 ---(ii)

Add both the equations

→ (x - y) + (x + y) = 6 + 16

→ x - y + x + y = 22

→ 2x = 22

→ x = 11

Substitute the value of x in eqⁿ (ii)

→ x + y = 16

→ 11 + y = 16

→ y = 16 - 11

→ y = 5

•°• Required numbers

  • x = 11
  • y = 5
