Answer:

  • x+9+x=129
  • 2x+9=129
  • 2x=129-9=120
  • 2x=120
  • x=120/2=60
  • 2nd no. is 60
  • 1st no. is 9 more
  • than twice a no.
  • so 2nd no. is 60+9=69
  • hence, 1st no. is 69 and next no is 60

The numbers are 40 and 89

Given :

  • One number is 9 more than twice another number.

  • The sum of the numbers is 129

To find :

The numbers

Solution :

Step 1 of 2 :

Form the equation

Let first number = x

Now other number is 9 more than twice another number.

Other number = 2x + 9

Now the sum of the numbers is 129

∴ x + 2x + 9 = 129

Step 2 of 2 :

Find the numbers

x + 2x + 9 = 129

⇒ 3x + 9 = 129

⇒ 3x = 129 - 9

⇒ 3x = 120

⇒ x = 120/3

⇒ x = 40

First number = x = 40

Second number

= 2x + 9

= ( 2 × 40 ) + 9

= 80 + 9

= 89

Hence the numbers are 40 and 89
