Answer:

The first number will be 9

The second number will be 3

Step-by-step explanation:

Firstly you will have to add 3 and 1 because one of the number is 3 times the other 1 number. So you will get 3.

Then you will multiply 3 by 3 to get 9 since the number is three times the other.

Then you will get 3 and 9.

S O L U T I O N :

\underline{\bf{Given\::}}

One number is three times the other number. The difference between the two numbers is 12.

\underline{\bf{Explanation\::}}

Let the one number be x & the other number be y respectively.

\underbrace{\sf{1^{st}\:Case\::}}

\mapsto\tt{x = 3y ...............(1)}

&

\underbrace{\sf{2^{nd}\:Case\::}}

\mapsto\tt{x - y = 12}

\mapsto\tt{3y - y = 12\:\:[from(1)]}

\mapsto\tt{2y = 12}

\mapsto\tt{y  =\cancel{12/2}}

\mapsto\bf{y = 6}

Putting the value of y in equation (1),we get;

\mapsto\tt{x = 3(6)}

\mapsto\bf{x = 18}

Thus,

The two numbers will be 18 & 6 .
