more conservative (with a small C) than Dubai, meaning that they are less used to seeing tourists in public places wearing beach wear (ie shorts etc) in public places such as malls etc. However, frankly, the A/C can be so fierce in the malls that we'd be cold dressed as such. And you say you're going this weekend? Don't think there's much chance of you walking around town during the day anyway. Daytime temps around 40C or more and humidity levels generally above 50%.

In the hotels (and their bars/restaurants) smart casual is the general order of the day. Gents shouldn't wear open toed sandals or shorts but apart from that YOU should be fine with strappy tops. Just check with the hotel when you arrive what dress codes are for the various restaurants. Rodeo Bar & Grill for example at the Beach Rotana is generally speaking a bit more formal than any of the 3 restaurants I mention below. For ladies, would suggest that you have a pashmina or similar with you at all times ... you never know when it will come in handy.

By the way, we think the Beach Rotana is a great hotel - recommend Prego (Italian) and Finz (Fish) restaurants. Trader Vics is good too. And there's an entrance to the relatively new Abu Dhabi Mall just by the entrance to Pregos. Means you don't have to go outside. There are a few good cafe-type places to eat there if you don't want a full-blown meal.
