Dhammapada is according to me is the most important literary work is Buddhism. It is a great introductory book. Very small, freely available.
It helps in building concepts for dependent origination. Thats the end goal for all Buddhists who are focused on seeing atleast the first stage of enlightenment.
The next important book would be the Digha Nikaya or Long Discourses. It clears up the remaining doubts, again building up clarity on dependent origination and how to complete it.
