Question :-

One of the two numbers exceeds the other number by 7 and if we add four times the smaller number to five times the greater number,we get 143 what are the numbers?

Required Answer :-

Let the smaller number be x

and the greater number be y

According to the first condition,

one of the two numbers (greater no.) exceeds the other number by 7.

y = x + 7

y - x = 7

- x + y = 7 - (i)

According to the second condition,

If we add four times the smaller number to five times the greater number we get 143.

4(x) + 5(y) = 143

4x + 5y = 143 -(ii)

Multiply equation (i) by 4 :-

- x + y = 7

x 4

___________

- 4x + 4y = 28 -(iii)

Adding equation (ii) and (iii),

4x + 5y = 143

-4x + 4y = 28

___________

9y = 171

y = 171/9

y = 19

put y = 19 in equation (i)

- x + y = 7

- x + 19 = 7

19 - 7 = x

x = 12

Therefore,

smaller number is 12 and greater number is 19.

Hope it help you :)
