assumed time taken by slower pipe is X minute , then faster pipe will take x/3 minutes to fill the tank. if both opened together 36 minutes would take to fill the tank..

Now, if both pipe work one day

1/x+3/x=1/36

solving the equation 144 minutes required by slower pipe alone to fill the tank.

x=144 min.
