Here 'their' is the two boys and the writer wants to explain that after the war when they both were orphaned, their sister suffered from tuberculosis of the spine, there were nobody to help them in worse situation. But due to their confidence, spirit, benovelence, they were able to bare all expenses of their sister and fullfilled her needs, they were always very strong enough. They forgot their past and moved ahead for their sister and themselves. They kept on struggling but not gave up.
