1 rabbit saw 6 elephants while going to the river.

So, it's only rabbit going to the river and not the elephants.

Every elephant saw 2 monkeys going to river.

So, it could be same 2 monkeys seen by all the elephants. So there are 2 monkeys going to the river.

Hence, total = 1+2 = 3

Means 3 animals are going towards the river.

The riddle says that one rabbit saw six elephants when going to the river. This means that the elephants were coming in the opposite direction. In other words, they were coming from the river.

If every elephant saw two monkeys going towards the river, then all the six elephants would have seen the same two monkeys as it is not mentioned that each elephant saw two monkeys. Moreover, another reason why the number of monkeys could be only two is that the elephants were together and would have seen the monkeys at the same time.

So, the animals that are going to the river are one rabbit and two monkeys, making it a total of three animals.

However, if you include the birds under the animal category, it must be noted that the parrots are also heading towards the river. This is because they are in the monkeys’ hands. And the monkeys are going towards the river. Since, each monkey has a parrot, there are totally two parrots.

In this case, the animals heading towards the river are one rabbit, two monkeys and two parrots. So, a total of five animals are going towards the river.
