Question :-

One side of a rectangle exceed its other side by 2cm if it's area is 195cm² determine the sides of the rectangle.

Answer:-

  • Length= 15 cm
  • Breadth = 13 cm

Given:-

  • length = x+2 cm
  • Breadth =x cm
  • Area = 195 cm²

To find:-

  • sides of rectangle

Solution:-

 \boxed{ \large{area \:  = length \times breadth}}

 \implies \: (x + 2) \times x = 195 \\ \\ \implies \: {x}^{2} + 2x = 195 \\ \\ \implies \: {x}^{2} + 2x - 195 = 0

  • By splitting the middle term

 \implies \: {x}^{2} + 15x - 13x - 195 = 0 \\ \\ \implies \: x(x + 15) - 13(x + 15) = 0 \\ \\ \implies \: (x + 15)(x - 13) = 0

Either

 \implies \: x + 15 = 0 \\ \\ \implies \: x = - 15

Or

 \implies \: x - 13 = 0 \\ \\ \implies \: x = 13

Length and breadth can't be negative.

Hence,

  • Length = 13 + 2 = 15 cm
  • Breadth = 13 cm
