The total number of sheep is 13.

Given - Fraction of sheep went to forest and field

Find - Total number of sheep

Solution - To solve this question, we will find part of sheep went to different areas using the assumed value. Then we will sum up those values to find the assumed value, which will state total number of sheep. Let the total number of sheep be x.

Representing the equation for finding x.

 \frac{1}{3} x +  \frac{2}{5} x + 12 = x

Taking LCM on Left Hand Side, we get 15.

 \frac{(1  \times 5) + (2 \times 3) + (12 \times 15)}{15}  = x

 \frac{5 + 6 + 180}{15}  = x

Performing addition in numerator

191 = 15x

x =  \frac{191}{15}

Performing division

x = 12.7

Since number of sheep can not be in fraction, thus, total number of sheep is 13.

Hence, the total number of sheep is 13.
