Let the no. be x,

According to the question,

= 1/3 of x - 40 = 1/5 of x

= x/3 - 40 = x/5

= x/3 - x/5 = 40

= (5x-3x)/15 = 40

= 2x/15 = 40

= 2x = 600

= x = 300

The Number is 300.

I hope this helps.

Answer:

x/3=40+x/5

x/3=200+x/5

cross multiplying we get

3(x+200)=5x

600+3x=5x

600-5x+3x=0

600-2x=0

-2x=-600

now both negative sign has been cancelled.

so,

2x =600

x=600/2

x=300

so the number =300
