This can be solved quite simply, using algebra.

16 + x/3 = 3x

3x - x/3 = 16

8x/3 = 16

x/3 = 2

x = 6

You can then check this quite easily, by seeing that if you add 16 to one third of 6, you do indeed get three times 6.
