Step-by-step explanation:

I’m going to assign (123) and (345) and (789). So each time I pick up the phone and dial one of those numbers the person I want to talk to answers. Our phone system is “functioning” very well. Then old Matthew opens a business and gets a second number (321).

What??!! Two inputs that have the same output!! It still functions. His friends and family call on ((123) and his customers call him on(321).

Now suppose instead of two inputs giving the same output we change it so one input has two outputs. Let's say sometimes when I dial (123) Matthew answers, but half the time Dave answers. THAT DOESN’T FUNCTION!!!

When I input a number I want the one and only one output I expect or I can’t function.
