Answer:

No one is obliged to love anyone/anything/anyplace in a free world. But it is highly recommended to show full hearted gratitude towards the place you hail from.

Loving one's country is the same as loving his/her's family. It's not always showering roses but no matter what happens we will try to see all the good things and accept bad things as a part of the parcel. We can try to change the bad or simply chose to live the life. It's an individual's decision. But since our sheer existence depends on how your nation treats (good or bad) you, having a natural bonding with the place you are from is always a good thing. Also the concept of loving your country breaks certain stigmas among people to bring together people from different walks of life to give them a single identity.

If love for the country supercedes the love for your own community then everyone can work together for the betterment of the nation. This will reduce internal conflicts because everyone want their country to do well no matter what.

That said love for the country should never be a reason cause Destruction to the world. As important one's country should be to him/her, the world as a whole should be more important. Otherwise there is no point in the unity that exists within the country. A person rooting for his country's ill doing at the expense of rest of the world is just the amplified version of a guy dissing his country for his personal gain.

hope this helps you
