Hey! I am in class 11th, and from the exams I have given, I can suggest you to understand the text, the process of Nomenclature, instead of learning all of this. The chances of these steps being asked in the examinations are nearly zero. However, you will definitely be asked to name the compounds that will be given to you. Hence, knowing nomenclature is very important, but cramming it's steps is unnecessary. I will provide you with the information you must know to be able to name a compound acc. to IUPAC.

No. Of Carbon Atoms-:

1 - Meth

2 - Eth

3 - Prop

4 - But

5 - Pent

6 - Hex

7 - Hept

8 - Oct

9 - Non

10 - Dec

Steps of Nomenclature :

1) Find longest C-C chain.

2) Start from wherever, Double/Triple bond is nearer, if its an Alkane (C-C Single bond), then start from wherever Substituent is nearer.

3) If two Substituents are there, then start in an alphabetical order, e.g, Substituent starting with B comes before Substituent starting with C.

(Bromo comes before chloro)

4) If 2 same Substituents are there, at diff. Positions, state both positions with comma and use DI. (e.g, 2,3-dimethyl.....)

5) If C-C single bond is there, state ane at the end, (alkane). If C-C double bond is there, state ene (alkene), if C-C triple bond is there, state yne (alkyne).

Priority in IUPAC naming :

F.g > double / Triple bond > substituents

That's all you need to know to be able to name the compounds. I would recommend you to practice a good no. of questions before your exam, instead of reading theory, as only practice will help you to get a hold of this topic.

I hope this would help you :)
