From his autobiography , we can see that,
He had a brief experience with smoking as well. Indian cigarettes were not in his reach, so he would steal copper from the servants in order to afford it. He stopped this behavior realizing what he was doing. He believed so strongly in truth that he wrote a confession to his father, who read it and tore up the note and washed away Gandhi’s sins with his tears. This taught him the lesson of compassion, to which he attached a hymn:
