In the majority of the human population the aortic arch is found on the left side.
The left sided aortic arch is a feature that is unique to the mammalian population.
In rare circumstances, there is anatomical variation where the aortic arch is found on the right rather than the left side. The actual cause of this variation is not know but is thought to due to chromosomal deletions.
