x⁴ + (1/x)⁴ = ?
x + 1/x = 5.
x⁴ + (1/x)⁴
= { x² }² + { (1/x)² }²
= ( x² + 1/x² )² - 2×x×1/x.
{ a² + b² = (a+b)² - 2ab } .
= { (x)² + (1/x)² }² - 2.
= (x + 1/x)² - 2×x×1/x - 2.
= (5)² - 2 - 2 .
( replacing x + 1/x by 5 ).
= 25 - 4
= 21.
