at the beginning of the story The Postmaster appear to be a I high headed it and ill tempered official his behaviour towards Ali when the latter ask him if he had a letter from his daughter was quite rude
once the Postmaster daughter was ill in another town he anxiously waiting for news from her it was at this point that his suffering father's heart realise the pain of separation in Ali is heart for Miriam I was no longer a ill tempered official but a loving father full of respect for Ali feeling thus it was only when the Postmaster himself undergone a similar experience that he was able to feel Ali pain
