In the story 'The Letter' written by Dhumketu, has undercurance of irony, the dominant is the one in the life of the postmaster. He ridicules Ali, humiliates him, insults him for his desperate wait of his only daughter's letter.

The postmaster realises the pain of Ali when his own daughter was sick. He was full of remorse get independence for his ill treatment to Ali. The postmaster had the same fatherly feeling as any father. Worried and anxious about his daughter's sickness he spent the sleepless night waiting for the news of her recovery and well-being. Earlier, he had rebuked Ali and called him a 'pest' and a 'mad man'. However, his attitude undergoes complete transformation after he finds Ali's daughter letter while waiting for one from his own daughter.

He realised the pain, anguish and sufferings of the coachman Ali. He realized the need of love, compassion, empathy and fellow feelings for those suffering from grief and pain of separation. That is why it is said that 'Only the bearer knows where the shoe pinches' , the postmaster realised the pain of Ali when he himself stepped into his shoe which was full of pain, anguish and suffering of a lonely father.
