The letter of Miriam for Ali sits at the centre of the story 'The Letter' . Not only this everything in the story takes its breath from the letter. Ali now lives for this letter and makes the post office his pilgrimage. Rain or shower , winter or summer he visits the post office hoping to receive this letter . He bears the insults of the post office officials for the sake of this letter. Then this letter teaches an important lesson of life to the ppostmaster. Through this letter the Postmaster now realise the grief and suffering of Ali and becomes sadate and mechured . Ali spiritually is not at peace until this letter reaches him . His ghost visit the Postmaster and teachers him the lesson . When the Postmaster and Lakshmi Das plays the letter to the Ali's grave , only then he is at peace. This where the letter acquires character of its own and Central to the story .

The Postmaster in the beginning is ill tempered, selfish and impatient he is casual indifferent, and feeling and inconsiderate also. But when he faces a situation similar to that of early he changes. He becomes carrying ,worrying ,concerned, patient, helpful, sympathetic and self-less also develop the virtue of understanding.
