This is not necessarily true.Variations which occur due to natural selection,confer an advantage.But variation due to genetic drift and mutation dont always confer an advantage

Only variations that confer an advantage to an individual organism will survive in a population. This statement is mostly true, but not always. Variations that are advantageous to an organism will help the organism to survive better in the environment. So these will survive in the population.
